Wood Species Available as Lumber / Sawn Timber

ASH

Ash is grown in Europe as well as North America. We import Ash in veneers and sawn timber for the furniture industry and for decorative panels.

AYOUS

Ayous is an African light-colored species with very smooth finish which is often used as replacement for Almaciga. Mainly used for mouldings and picture frames.

AZOBE

Azobe is also called Iron wood for its extraordinary strength and durability. Used for port buildings and other outdoor projects.

BAGTIKAN

Bagtikan, a Philippine hardwood (Parashorea malaanonan), presents a workable, light red timber with a straight grain, suitable for structural applications and interior finishes, though careful selection is needed to minimize potential warping. We import the equivalent species from Malaysia where it is legal and sustainable.

BEECH

Beech is widespread in Northern Europe and is used for anything from indoor furniture to flooring, doors and joinery. Not suitable for outdoor use.

BIRCH

Birch wood from Northern Europe is an excellent species for plywood, and indoor furniture. We import mainly Birch plywood, and component parts.

CEDAR

Western Red Cedar is one of the exclusive softwoods from North America. It is durable for outdoor use, and most often used for claddings.

CHERRY

Cherry wood is a popular type of hardwood commonly used in furniture, cabinets, and floorings. It is highly valued because it’s beautiful, durable, and easy to work with.

DIBETOU

Dibetou wood is a tropical hardwood from Africa, prized for its golden-brown color with dark streaks, and used in high-quality furniture, veneers, and interior joinery. It is often used as a cheaper alternative to walnut.

GRANDIS

Eucalyptus grandis is a plantation species grown mainly in South America and Southern Africa. Available in FSC® Certified Logs and Sawn Timber upon request. It is used for indoor as well as outdoor furniture and also for windows and mouldings.

HINOKI

Hinoki wood, a Japanese softwood, is renowned for its light color, fine grain, and natural durability, making it ideal for premium interior finishes and traditional Japanese construction and prized for its aromatic oils and resistance to moisture. We sell mainly for Sauna and Asian restaurant fit-out.

IROKO

Iroko is an African species which is a very versatile species suited for outdoor as well as indoor furniture, flooring and joinery. It is often used as a cheaper and sustainable replacement for old grown teak.

KHAYA

Khaya wood, often called African mahogany, is a beautiful and versatile hardwood valued for its reddish-brown hues and good working properties, making it a popular choice for furniture, cabinetry, and musical instruments. This is a genuine mahogany, mainly used for high-end projects.

KOSIPO

Kosipo, a reddish-brown tropical hardwood from Africa, offers a distinctive appearance and moderate durability, making it suitable for high-quality furniture and interior joinery, though its silica content necessitates the use of hard metal tools. Similar to Luzon Tanguile wood.

LIME

Lime is also call basswood and is a light-colored species which is excellent for furniture and mouldings.

MAPLE

We offer North American Maple and European Sycamore in veneers and sawn timber. This is a popular species for indoor furniture and decorative panels.

MERANTI

Dark Red Meranti is a natural wood species from Malaysia and Indonesia. It is a Shorea species, and almost identical to “Lauan”, or Philippine Mahogany.

MERBAU

Merbau is also known as Kwila, or Ipil in the Philippines. It is a hard species, well suited for flooring and decking, and popular for joinery and tabletops.

OAK (RED)

Red oak is a popular hardwood known for its strength and distinctive open grain pattern, making it a reliable choice for durable furniture, flooring, and interior trim; its reddish hue and workability are favored by many woodworkers. Red Oak is often a cheaper alternative to White Oak.

OAK (WHITE)

White oak is a dense and robust hardwood celebrated for its exceptional strength and resistance to decay, making it a premium choice for long-lasting projects. Its closed-pore structure provides excellent water resistance, ideal for applications like flooring, cabinetry, and outdoor furniture. Currently our most popular wood species for flooring and high-end projects.

OKAN

Okan is a very durable wood from Africa. Often used as replacement for Yakal for outdoor and marine applications.

OKOUME

Okoume is very similar to Lauan or Tanguile and is imported from Africa for doors and joinery.

PADOUK

Padouk is a Pterocarpus species just like Narra. It is a big darker in color and used as Narra replacement for flooring, doors, jambs, and furniture.

PAPUA ROSEWOOD

Narra is no longer legally available in the Philippines, but we import legal Rosewood (exactly the same species) from PNG, Solomons and Indonesia.

PINE

Pine has quickly become one of the most popular species in the Philippines due it’s versatile uses. We import mainly form Europe and North America.

POPLAR

Poplar is available from Europe and North America. It is a popular species for hidden parts of furniture, and for plywood production. Light weight and color.

SAPELE

Sapelli is an African Mahogany type which is very popular as veneers for paneling and doors. We can source this in FSC® Certified Sawn Timbers.

SPRUCE

Spruce is very similar to pine, and just as versatile. It is lighter in color and with smaller knots. It is often mixed in SPF (Spruce/Pine/Fir) from North America. From Europe we import pure spruce species also.

SURIAN

Surian is the Malaysian name for Kalantas, which is know for it’s beaty for decorative items, and has a very pleasant cedar smell. It is excellent for trellis and wall cladding and also used for cigar boxes.

TALI

Tali is like Okan and thus also to Yakal and is used for outdoor purposes such as decking.

TEAK

Teak is one of the best-known commercial wood species in the world. Grown mainly in plantation, but also available in natural form from Burma (currently banned), India as an area for old grown. It is used for almost any purpose. Excellent for outdoor and marine purposes.

WALNUT

Walnut is imported from Europe as well as North America. It is widely used in high end furniture. We import veneers as well as sawn timber.

WENGE

Wenge is one of the most premium species we have in stock. It is very dark with a pronounced grain and very sought after for musical instruments and furniture.

YAKAL

refers to the tree Shorea astylosa, a large, native Philippine tree species, known for its hard, dark brownish-yellow wood, used for high-grade construction and other durable application. We import the legal equivalent also known as Bangkirai.

What is "rough sawn timber" and how does it differ from other lumber products?

Rough-sawn timber refers to wood that has been cut directly from the log into various dimensions at a sawmill but has not undergone any further planning, sanding, or finishing processes. It retains a natural, coarse texture with visible saw marks and irregularities.

Can rough-sawn timber be used for outdoor applications?

It depends on the species, and in most cases, it would require some sanding and machining to the exact size. Many of our rough-sawn timber species are suitable for outdoor use, especially hardwoods known for their natural durability. However, for prolonged longevity and protection against elements like moisture, insects, and UV rays, we generally recommend treating rough-sawn timber with appropriate finishes such as sealants, stains, or paints.

Do you offer custom cutting or specific dimensions for rough sawn timber?

At FILTRA Timber, we focus mainly on raw material sales, but we also have a range of pre-cut sizes which can be used for specific purposes. Should you require custom cuts or specialized processing, we encourage you to visit our sister company at www.idewood.com.

How should I store and handle rough-sawn timber?

Rough-sawn timber, especially if not kiln-dried, can retain more moisture. Proper storage is crucial to prevent warping, cracking, or mold growth. We recommend storing timber in a dry, well-ventilated area, off the ground. Most of our lumber is already KD, and easy to store in a dry area.
