Tradition Meets Tech: FILTRA Timber Launches “Tim the Tarsier,” a 24/7 AI Wood Expert

When you think of a heavy, traditional industry like timber and lumber distribution, artificial intelligence probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But in a fast-moving construction market like the Philippines, architects, contractors, and designers expect answers instantly, even outside of regular business hours. That is why at FILTRA Timber, we decided to do something a little unconventional: we are proud to introduce Tim the Tarsier, not just as a friendly face for our brand, but as a 24/7 digital guide designed to make sourcing sustainable, high-quality timber faster and easier for our partners across the country.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly finding its way into Philippine businesses, but in our traditional industry, we wanted to take a distinctly different approach. That is why we created Tim the Tarsier—our AI-powered digital character designed to make the often highly technical world of timber much easier and more engaging for our customers.

And the experiment is already producing results we can actually measure: Tim’s social-media content is generating more direct messages than our traditional posts, with many of those conversations turning into serious commercial enquiries. That makes Tim much more than just a marketing mascot—he is becoming a brand-new entry point into our business.

Turning timber expertise into a conversation

Choosing timber is rarely as simple as picking a color or appearance. Architects, furniture manufacturers, contractors, and designers need to consider species, durability, dimensions, availability, application, legality, and sustainability.

We maintain an inventory of more than 2 million board feet across more than 40 wood species, sourced through our global international network. We also proudly hold FSC® and PEFC™ Chain of Custody certifications.

We are using Tim to turn some of that specialist knowledge into accessible, bite-sized social-media content. He can explain the difference between species, discuss suitable applications, introduce sustainable alternatives, and answer questions that you might otherwise have to research yourself—or wait until the next business day to ask our sales team.

Our next big step will be the launch of “Chat with Tim” right here on our website, allowing you to interact directly with our AI character at any time rather than only encountering him through social media.

AI that supports people rather than replaces them

We do not see Tim as a replacement for our sales or technical teams. Instead, we view him as a reliable 24/7 first point of contact.

A customer may start with a simple question on social media or our chat tool. But the moment an enquiry develops into a real project requiring physical samples, pricing, stock availability, technical information, or detailed specifications, our expert human team steps right in.

“We have decades of timber experience inside the company. Tim gives us a new way of making that knowledge accessible to our customers at any time.”

From the Screen to the Streets

Our experiment with Tim is also moving well beyond digital channels. We have begun featuring Tim on our company cars and delivery trucks, turning our digital character into a physical part of our identity on Philippine roads.

It is an unusual combination: a very traditional business selling a very physical product, using modern technology to start meaningful conversations with our partners. We believe this is the real opportunity for AI in traditional industries—not replacing the people who know the business inside and out, but making their knowledge easier to find.
